FEATURED LABS
The following Labs are special dogs that have been rescued by
Midwest Labrador Retriever Rescue, Inc.
Missy
Missy is an extremely sweet, slightly shy, and very well behaved girl. She’s 8 ˝ years old. She has the run of the house and gets along well with the other 2 dogs she lives with. She has also spent time with cats and gets along fine with them. Missy is fully housebroken, and knows come, sit, down, shake, speak and loves to retrieve balls Like many dogs her age, Missy has some minor health problems that are well controlled on medication. She’s exceptionally sweet and her love and devotion are well worth the extra bit of care she needs. Missy would love a quiet home where she can hang out, play a little and get a lot of love and attention. If you’re looking for a really great dog and are able to provide a little extra care, Missy would love to meet you. UPDATE-8/19/2008: Unfortunately Missy has had a difficult summer. Her left
knee that had prior cruciate ligament surgery was bothering
her. When she had a consult with the surgeon, they found her
knee hadn't healed as well as they would like from the
prior surgery, so they repeated the surgery. Unfortunately,
it's not uncommon for dogs that have torn one cruciate
to also tear the same ligament in the other leg due to some
age related changes that often affect both knees. Very
sadly, just 2 weeks after the repair of left knee, she was
one of the unfortunate ones that tore the same ligament in
the other knee. Missy is now working on getting through the
very difficult early weeks of recovery. Even though it is
very difficult for her to get around right now, she still
wags her tail and gives kisses when she's getting
attention. Missy has always been a laid back, quiet girl.
She mostly loves to spend time with people and retrieve her
ball. Because she's always been a more quiet Lab we're
hopeful that she'll still be able to enjoy all her
favorite activities when she's better.
Even though she injured ligaments in both knees, the
conditions in the joint that lead to this type of injury
doesn't tend to cause any other traumatic injuries to
occur. Some of the stress on her joints probably came from
years of being overweight before being rescued. Her prior
family turned her into a shelter because she was too large
for their home. She has lost the excess weight she was
carrying and is now down to 62 lbs. which really reduces the
stress on her joints and should make her recovery easier.
Missy is a joy to have around, even during her recovery.
She's a very, very sweet laid back angel that will
truly melt your heart and can't wait to find her
special forever home!
Many, many thanks to MLRR for all the support and great
care they have provided for Missy.
UPDATE 1/6/2009:
I'm happy to report that Missy is doing better! A
second surgery was performed on her right knee this Fall
because the first surgical repair did not provide adequate
stabilization. She had a more involved procedure performed
this time and it's working well for her. This repair is
extremely stable and is expected to be a permanent repair.
Her attitude and activity has improved significantly since
the last surgery. She's starting to go up and down
stairs again, is very happy at meal times and tells me if
I'm too slow filling the bowl, enjoying sleeping
next to my bed and even played a little with the snow as it
was being shoveled (she would have played a lot more but
she's not allowed yet). Missy has a follow up
appointment with her surgeon next week and will hopefully be
off of any restrictions at that time. Even with all
she's been through, she's still an exceptionally
sweet, loving and happy girl that will melt your heart!
