LABS FOR ADOPTION
Last Updated Thursday, 02-Sep-2010 08:40:11 CDT

The following are some of the Labs available for adoption. Please note that these may not be the only dogs that are currently available, and we are always taking new Labs into rescue. All dogs are spayed or neutered and heartworm negative unless otherwise stated.

We specialize in "Match Making". We know our dogs very well through speaking with the previous owner or shelter, and through evaluating the dogs further while they are in foster care. We then get to know our adoption applicants through a detailed application and a home visit. We don't accept applications for a specific dog. Instead, we match applicants with the appropriate dog based on our knowledge and experience.

MLRR currently serves the city of Chicago and its suburbs (Illinois only, we do not adopt out of state). Before someone can meet one of the available Labs, they must first go through our adoption approval process. Please see the Adoption Information page for more information.

For additional Labs or Lab mixes needing homes, please see our Lab Referral page.
Ivy
Hi everybody, I'm Ivy. I am 4 1/2 years old and have been having a tough time lately. My wonderful owner died a few weeks ago and I am very lonely for someone to love me again. I am lucky to be staying with MLRR and have really been enjoying staying with my foster sister and kitties, but I really want a brand new forever home. I am very well behaved - in the car, in the house, on walks. I love playing with children (especially if there is a ball involved). I get along with everyone and I just love to cuddle and give kisses. Please call soon.
Weezer
My name is Weezer and I am a 3yo yellow Lab. I'm a fun boy who loves to play and loves attention. I lost my previous family and was found stray, and I definitely have a few pounds to put on - but that's OK because I garble up my food as soon as it's put on the ground. Because of my spotty past, it took me a little while to get used to my foster home, but once I did - oh boy did I settle right in. I still tend to play like a puppy, I love to bounce around in hopes that you'll play with me! I don't need to be in a crated - i'm just fine roaming the house on my own while you're gone. I'm also very good on my leash and love to go for walks! I'll make a great family dog - please adopt me!
Woody
Hey! I'm Woody! I am a sturdy 71 pound yellow Labrador Retriever. I have huge paws and strong legs and am estimated to be two years of age. It's hard to believe I am two because I act like a puppy. I am a quick learner and love training. "Stay" is soooo hard for me right now, but I am working really hard at it. I am very sweet, very enthusiastic (my tail wags 24/7), and I love being with my people. Walks are one of my favorite activities along with chewing on my rope and kong. I have no problem pawing your hand in coaxing you to pet me--I can be very persistent in this. I am learning what "no" means...not my favorite word at all, especially when I want to play and my foster parents are busy doing something else. Because I am so happy all the time, sometimes I like to be by myself and nap to recharge my batteries. My foster parents will look for me and I'll be crashed out in the dining room lying in the sun. My crate is not my number one choice of places to be, but after a few minutes of protesting I relax. I am ecstatic when my foster parents return because that means fun will soon follow.
Super Cooper
Hi. I’m Cooper, just the nicest ol’ guy you’ll ever meet. I love people and other dogs. I love to go for walks and play with my toys. I do the cutest little dance and kind of squint my eyes when I’m excited about something. My foster mom calls me Super Cooper. I have no idea what she’s talking about. I’m totally housebroken, though not interested in the crate, and I have good manners. I love to be petted and butt scratches are the bomb! But I have a sad story to tell. My owner lost her job last year and when she finally found a new one, it was in Manhattan, not a good place for a dog like me. I’m pretty confused right now, because she helped me get into my foster mom’s car the other day and then she got all teary-eyed, and now I’m living with these total strangers. I lived with her for five years and she just gives me a little kiss and this nice lady takes me away? What’s up with that? Lucky for me, I have this great foster brother who plays with me, and I get to spend a lot of time outside with my foster mom. Here’s the skinny though: I weigh a little more than I should. I think I might need more exercise or something. I’m about 90 lbs, but I should be more like 80. If you throw the ball for me and take me on nice walks, I’ll shape up in no time at all! I’m used to being a best friend. If you need one, I’m your man!
Roy
Hi ! My name is Old Roy, but everyone here just calls me “Roy”. I am a big chocolate boy that weighs in at 85 lbs. and my foster Mom believes I am about 5 years old. She calls me a “GENTLE GIANT”. I wish I could tell her about my past years, but it probably wouldn’t make a very pretty story. I was recently neutered, had a benign lumpectomy and several teeth removed, so I will probably have to be on a soft or semi-moist food diet for the rest of my life. I have had my share of bumps and bruises, but I am cleaning up very nicely and my foster Mom says I am on my way to becoming a very sweet, quiet and handsome gentleman. I get along very well with my foster brother. We both like to lie at “Mom’s” side when she watches TV or is at her computer. Of course, I don’t like to be left behind so I do follow her everywhere; even when she tells me to “stay, I’ll be right back”. Guess I don’t understand words like that or “sit” or “down”, but I do know the words “come” and “no”. She tells me I will understand more after I have been to obedience school; whatever that is. I am very gentle and have so much love to give, so I can’t wait to meet my forever family. I hope you will come to meet me soon.
Hannah
Hi, I’m Hannah. I’m a two-year old yellow lab and I have such a great personality. Today was a lot of fun. My foster dad took me to the dog beach. I made a lot of friends of my own and I learned to swim. My foster dad was laughing and told me he has never seen a lab struggle in water like I was. Hey! I’m not the best at it but I’m learning. My foster dad says he is going to take me back to the lake for another swim session. I’m already excited about it. Although I loved the water, my favorite part of the day was playing with the tennis ball. I went crazy. You had to see it to believe it. I was burying it in the sand and digging it up. I’m also learning how to walk on the leash. I’m good most of the time, but I tend to follow my nose and get really excited when I see another pooch. I love being around people and other dogs. I’m very even-tempered and will be just fine in a house with lots of people and other pups. I haven’t been around cats yet, but you’re more than welcome to bring your kitty for a visit. I’ll do my best to behave, promise! If you’re looking for someone to cuddle up with you on those cold, Chicago nights, I’m your gal. I just can’t get enough of people. When you’re going to be out of the house for a few hours, just put me in my crate and I’ll be okay. I won’t bark or whine. When you get back and let me out of my crate, you better be ready for some kisses because I’m gonna lay ‘em on ya! My foster dad describes me with one word: optimist. I’m always smiling and my tail is always wagging. If I sound like someone you would like to make part of your family, stop by for a visit.
Kramer
Hi, I’m Kramer. I’m a black male who will probably be medium-sized once I get up to a healthier weight. I’m very playful and my foster family thinks I must be about two years old. I find joy in running for the sake of running, rolling in the grass, and chasing toys. I get along with the big Labs in my foster home and I’m quiet and relaxed indoors. I am very quiet in my crate and I sleep in it all night in the master bedroom. My only indoor accident was my first day home with my foster family. My foster mom tells people I’m “awesome”. You’ll see, I am a GREAT dog.
JJ
Hi, I'm JJ! I am a loving girl and absolutely LOVE people. I'm about 1 1/2 years old and 65 pounds. I am taking it easy on my foster mom because I am her first dog. I don't jump on furniture, I don't chew on things - even thought there are shoes everywhere at my house, my favorite toy is a tennis ball and I rarely bark. I am still getting used to my crate but if you bribe me with a treat it isn't so bad. In the next few weeks I hope to prove to my foster mom that I am responsible enough to be left alone without the crate so wish me luck! I am mostly housebroken so long as you remember to take me for a walk after meals and/or water and I love to drink water! I am exploring all kinds of new things living in the city like walking up 4 flights of stairs to get home. I was afraid of the stairs at first but now I race my foster mom and can run up and down twice before she reaches the top! I visited a dog park and today was my first day at doggie day care! Playing with other dogs is nice but I prefer people because they give better back rubs! I will sit at your feet and let you pet me for hours. I really like attention and will give you a little nudge when I want to be petted. I sleep on my dog bed in my mom's room and am as quiet as a mouse so she can sleep. My foster mom thinks I am the most adorable, wonderful girl and you will too as soon as you meet me!
Ruby
Dear diary, It's me, Ruby and I've been assigned to my first human project. The assignment:
1. To teach my foster mom how to throw the ball (title nine did her no good!) 1a. to also teach her trust skills. she can be very reluctant to drop it.
2. Take her on walks so she can learn to meet people without such macho posturing. (The secret is to...well it seems a bit too indelicate to discuss here. When i meet you in person we can talk of these things then)
2a. She does have some dominance displays around other people but they are mostly more style than substance- but style does matter
3. She is perfecting her potty training and is coming along very nicely with that.
4. She walks very nicely on a leash but does have some prey drive which we are working on.
5. Phobias of large noisy things like lawn mowers makes her want to run. (probably abused by a lawn care service operator!),
6. Overheard the following about me: "Full of life and fun. Will be a fetcher of some standing and does not need any coaching on how to love and cuddle- two very important features...." Get this : "A shimmering 2 year old black beauty of perhaps 40 lbs that will put anyone standing within arms length in a better light!"
The human has definitely been paying attention. To be continued.
Doogie ADOPTED!
All right, now you know my name. My foster Mom calls me Doogie, or Doogs, or even Doogaru, but regardless what she calls me, I come a runnin’ to see what is going on. I think I am a typical black 1 year old lab mix. I got this white patch on my chest and a little spot of white on my front paw. I call the “white on my paw” a clean indicator. If you take a look at it and if it is still white, chances are the rest of my feet are clean. But if it is dark… well, you better get out the towel. I’m not sure how I ended up in my new home but my foster mom says it is only temporary. I try and play with my foster brother but he is an old guy and doesn’t want to play nearly as much as me. I chew the bones and pounce on the tennis ball and he just shakes his head. Even though I am 60 pounds, I am pretty agile. I can walk right under my foster brother and he doesn’t even see it coming. I don’t bark and I like to be outside running around in the yard and looking at the passersby. The first day I had an accident in the house. I don’t know why you humans call it an accident because I did do it on purpose. But now I know NOT to do it inside and so when I go outside my foster mom tells me BATHROOM and I do what I need to do. As you can see I am a quick study. Just the other day, my water bowl was empty so I picked it up and carried it over to my foster mother who was standing by the sink. But I haven’t yet figured out the faucet. I am a lover not a fighter. You can take my food bowl away but it is ok with me, ‘cause I know you will give it back. You will give it back won’t you? I have to tell you though; I am not sure about this crate thing. I have to go in it during the day and so far, I don’t like it. I guess I am not a ‘Boy Scout’ because I am not trustworthy. However, at night I am darn near an angel. I don’t go in the crate and we all wake up in the morning, and everything is just fine. I don’t jump up on people. I like everybody, even those cute little tykes. So do you want to meet me? I have to tell you my smile will melt your heart. I am a happy-go-lucky guy looking for a fun family, someone to run with and play with, someone who will shower me with plenty of hugs and kisses and I will return the affection tenfold.
Koda ADOPTED!
Hi my name is Koda and I am an 8 month old chocolate male. I might be able to fool you about my age though because I hear my foster mommy say all the time that I am sooooo good for being so young! I was an owner surrender, they just did not have time for me. I just can’t imagine that, because I also hear my foster mommy say how she can’t believe that anyone would give me up, that I am on my way to being the perfect companion. I get along great with everybody, and am such a quick learner. I am very eager to please. And for being a lab I really don’t have a huge appetite! If you want a lover, I’m the guy for you, I love to give kisses. I just can’t wait to be with my forever family, so do you have the time for me?

Drake ADOPTED!
Hi Everyone, my name is Drake. I'm a 3-4 year old Black Lab and my foster mom says I’m the perfect size, weighting in around 55lbs. I love to get attention and if I don’t think you’ve petted me long enough I will let you know by nudging you with my nose. I also nudge your feet, as I’m not opposed to a good foot pet either. I am very good at eating and taking treats, even from the 9 year old little girl that I live with. I also let her and, anyone really, take toys, bones and food away from me without any problems. I get along great with kids of all ages as I don't jump and I love my canine foster dog brother too. We wrestle a lot and run around. During the day when my foster family is away I go into my crate but they've been leaving me out for longer periods of time and I've done GREAT. At night I sleep upstairs with them, on my own bed.

I underwent treatment for heartworm back in May and I'm now off my restricted activity and I just LOVE going for walks and to doggie daycare to play with all my friends! I also recently spent a week with another foster family while my family was on and they have this thing called a CAT and guess what--I actually liked him-who knew? He pretty much did his own thing as did I, but we laid together in the same room and were pretty relaxed with each other. I did bark at him a few times, but stopped when I was told. So, if you have a cat, we might want to try this out...maybe we can be really good friends! I hope to see you soon.

Chloe ADOPTED!
Hi - my name is Chloe and I'm a pretty yellow lab girl around 2 years old. I was desperately in need of rescue as my family moved away and left me behind! I must have been alone for a long time as I was very skinny when someone realized I was there and MLRR came to the rescue. My foster mom is working to put weight on me but I am still a tall and thin girl. I am amazingly loving after all I have been through. I love to take walks although my mom limits me to short walks to keep the calories on my body. I'm a very good girl in the house and have not had any accidents. I sleep in the living room on a blanket (or on the couch if I can) during the day and in my mom's bedroom at night next to her bed. I'm friendly to all people I meet but I'm not too sure about other dogs. I just need some food and TLC and I'll be back to normal - stop by and see me if you have room for me in your heart.
